         e. Birth-wise position in the family

Middle one (Fifth out of nine). Two elder sisters, two elder brothers; two younger sisters, two younger brothers.

Except for the two eldest sisters, all of us have studied in Farook College.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION INCLUDING TRIVIA

After passing Pre-Degree IV Group in 1968, it was a natural choice for me to join for B Com since I wanted to continue in Farook College, and the Commerce Department was a prestigious one. I joined for B Com, but when BA English Course was started the same year, I shifted to that—after attending B Com classes for just one month.

The K R Kumaraswamy Iyer’s Coronation Prize which I was awarded for being top-scorer in English in Pre-degree examination gave me a taste of what Government awards will be like. I was intimated about the award a year later, but apart from the fact that it was a cash award nothing at all was known—how to collect it, when or where. Another year later, I asked about this to Principal Prof K A Jaleel in writing, and he promptly directed me to contact the District Collector. Months later I got the Collector’s reply: “The award has not been received in this office.” Needless to say, I gave up the chase. Where did the cash award go? I would now be satisfied with an answer to this question, but even that is an impossibility.

The CDI grant of Rs 15 lakhs by the New York-based Ford Foundation in 1994 was a pointer to the fact that the College was ready to take up a global role. I was part of the two-member team that prepared and processed the Project proposals. The other member, Dr Mubarak Pasha, was appointed Principal in 1996. To record their appreciation for the successful preparation of the CDI project proposals, the College Managing Committee, in an unprecedented gesture, hosted a special dinner on 3 January 1995 in honour of the two of us and the Principal Prof V V Kunhabdulla at Paramount Tower, Calicut.

The all-Kerala Quiz programme titled “Kairali” has been the only time so far that Farook College figured on the national channel DD as producer. The programme was anchored by Dr V C Haris, then member of the English department, and the production executive was Jamaluddin Farooqi, now in India Vision. The winners of the quiz? Can’t recollect.

I had a somewhat long stint as Staff Editor. A unique experience was when I was compelled to bring out the Magazine for 1988-89 single-handed, after the Student Editor deserted his duty and fled! The magazine was rather slim but worth the effort.

Resource Person for journalistic programmes in subjects like Media Ethics, Translation and Style.

Gave talks on language, literature, media, culture etc at various forums.

Member of the Academic Council of two CBSE schools; member of the Staff Selection Boards of three schools, for the selection of English teachers.

Resource Person for several training programmes organised by organisations like Centre for Information and Guidance India (CIGI) and P M Institute for Civil Services, Farook College.

Giving classes in result-oriented programmes organised by voluntary organisations in the specific areas of written English, spoken English, facing interviews, vocabulary building and general English communication and grammar.

The residential nature of the College helps a lot to cement relationships. Ever since I left Perintalmanna to Feroke in 1966, I have been part of this hillock, as hostel resident, warden, occupant of Staff Quarters No 6 (1983-1993) where mine was the very first phone connection and the only one for more than a year.

And another fact, for whatever it is worth: Towards the end of my career, I think during 2004-05, there was a long stretch of about twenty months in which I never lost a single day of duty—I did not avail myself of any leave including Casual Leave. (The only leave I availed was Leave on Other Duty, for university examination duties.) I suppose that must be some kind of a record. (Don’t know if Prof N V Beeran had a better record—most likely he had!)
